5. Grammar - Comparison of adjectives

You need the comparative or the superlative form of adjectives to compare things with each other.
Du verwendest die Steigerung von Adjektiven, um Dinge miteinander zu vergleichen.


💡 form:

1. short adjectives (one or two syllables) kurze Adjektive (ein oder zwei Silben)

With short adjectives you add ~er and ~est to the adjective.

basic form comparative superlative
adjective adjective +er the + adjective +est

✏️ example:

comparative
The trumpet is smaller than the guitar. Die Trompete ist kleiner als die Gitarre.
The saxophone is louder than the sitar. Das Saxophon ist lauter als die Sitar.
superlative
The piano isn't the smallest instrument. Das Klavier ist nicht das kleinste Instrument.
The drum set is the loudest instrument. Das Schlagzeug ist das lauteste Instrument.


2. long adjectives (three or more syllables) lange Adjektive (drei und mehr Silben)

With long adjectives you must use more or the most in front of the adjective.

basic form comparative superlative
adjective more +adjective the most +adjective
